The Hutchinson Brothers and I are still buzzing over the great review of Joe’s Comix: WILD KINGDOM at Broken Frontier…wow. If you haven’t read it yet, go do so. I can’t properly express my happiness over a reviewer who really “gets” the wild cartooning of Joe Hutchinson…and then offers appropriate appreciation for the technical work that Daryl Hutchinson put in.
But it’s #HumpdayHutchinsons time! We’re going back to 1987, the heart of the legendary black and white boom. (Hi, TMNT guys!) The level of creative and publishing entrepreneurship was through the roof, and it felt like comic readers (and publishers) were tripping over themselves to read The Next Big Thing.
Enter Tim Corrigan and his C&T Graphics. As publisher of Small Press Comics Explosion, and as an extremely well-connected creator in our little corner of the cartooning world, Tim knew the best of the best. When he decided to expand C&T from mail order zines into nationally distributed comics through comic shops, he knew exactly who to call.
One of his contacts? Phoenix Master Joe Hutchinson, of course. For Tim’s Czar Chasm anthology series, Joe contributed “It’s A Groovy World” – and an eight-page story in a 40-ish page magazine is nothing to sneeze at. Let’s take a look at it right here!

Beyond that, Tim allowed contributors to place an advertisement for their self-publishing efforts. Here’s Joe and Daryl’s Anthrax Press piece:
We have looked at most all of Joe’s animal-related mincomics in Joe’s Comix: WILD KINGDOM, but some of the titles probably aren’t familiar to more recent fans of the brothers. That’s why another collection is in the works! No timetable set, but plans are afoot.
Joe’s cartooning – animals or people – is always wild and fun…so take a look at what’s already available! Big brother Daryl remastered every Joe Hutchinson story that we could find related to animals and packed them into a single volume — Joe’s Comix: WILD KINGDOM! 124 pages, colored for the first time in a glorious full magazine-size package. It’s wonderful. A true Phoenix Masters project, to be sure.
