Something in the Water #3 is live on Instagram

Who knew? I had finished all the illustration work on Something in the Water #3 but had yet to script, letter and (digitally) paste it up. I’m genuinely trying to stay true to my New Year’s resolution, so I completed the zine and posted it up on Instagram for everyone to read.

And while I’ll leave the tortured navel-gazing over the art to the back page of issue #3, I’ll note that I have a love-hate relationship with the eight-page minicomic format as a storytelling tool.

I love that I can push an issue through reasonably quickly. I love that I can leverage the short bursts of information to provide a slow drip of storytelling — there’s no way that I can tell the whole story in six or seven pages, so I don’t even try. I love that I can post individual pages on Instagram for readers to swipe through.

But I hate that the physical page size forces me to script in such tiny bits! I don’t want to shrink the type any further, but gosh what I would do for a little more lettering space….

Anyway, Faduma recaps her first substantive interview in Sherman in this issue. And she eats a salad. Enjoy!
