Time and time again, I hear “How can I get more people to know about my comics?” (or zines…same thing for this purpose). There are many possible answers, but I’ll throw one out for the good of the conversation: We need to leverage each others’ networks.
Meet Small Press Interview.

Small Press Interview is an 8-page minicomic-sized zine that helps small press comics/zine publishers to do four things:
- Tell a little about themselves
- Explain what they love about small press
- Share information about their publications
- Direct potential readers to their books (websites, emails, mail addresses, etc.)
Short, sweet and to the point. That’s Small Press Interview.
The title of this post says that there’s an experiment involved. What’s that, you ask? I’m so glad you asked.
I’m happy to make a Small Press Interview zine for any publisher who provides the relevant content. I can put these together using pro-level graphic design tools in no time flat. I’ll provide you with a PDF of the zine that you can give to your local copy shop. I’ll even host your PDF on a special page on this site. Let’s go even further: I’ll post your zine on Facebook (I usually post to about 4-5 groups as well as the regular Phoenix Productions wall) and Twitter.
And what I ask of participating publishers is simple. Add at least one physical copy of another publisher’s Small Press Interview zine into your mailings at no charge to the reader. (Sure, you can send out your own zine as well. Point is, you’re helping another publisher with the understanding that you, too, will be helped.)
And if you’re really cool, you’ll print a few extras of everyone’s zines for comic shows and cons and lay them out as freebies.
It’s the ultimate mutual assistance program. We each spend the quarter to print someone else’s zine and add it to our mailing. In the process, everyone’s information is spread far and wide.
Whaddya say, folks? Do you want to join in this little endeavor? If so, head on over to the Small Press Interview page to get the details. I look forward to making a LOT of zines…first come, first served!
Let the Grand Experiment commence!
This is a great idea, Tom. Thanks in advance for the work you’re going to put into it!
