HEROES NOW: PATRIOT – COMMENTARY EDITION on sale NOW

That’s right, kids! More PATRIOT!

Seriously, some pre-release feedback suggested that this book was a little unique for today’s marketplace and, as a result, was a tad confusing for some readers. I thought it best to use the time immediately following the completion of the original HEROES NOW: PATRIOT book to jot down my thoughts and motivations on the book for those interested in better understanding what was in my mind as I wrote.

Out of that came the COMMENTARY EDITION. This edition contains the following in a magazine-size format:

• A complete HEROES NOW: PATRIOT story at full, standard comic size
• Margin notes explaining concepts, ideas, passions and motivations in the delivery of each page, plus commentary on interior artist Tony Lorenz and cover artist Larry Johnson’s illustrations
• A pinup with Tony Lorenz’s first Patriot illustration
• A “Process” section in the rear of the book that offers a deep dive into two interior pages and the cover of HEROES NOW: PATRIOT. With full comic size recreations showing every step of the creative process and margin notes discussing what you see, each section devotes a whole page to:
  • Scripts
  • Layouts
  • Finished pencils
  • Inks
  • Lettering/finished pages

What does this mean, you ask? Well, try this on for some margin notes. I present this page because it’s relatively innocuous and doesn’t tell a ton about the story. I’d hate to give anything away!

But note the margin notes. This is perhaps the lightest page on margin notes (not much you can say about a splash panel); most pages have a full column of commentary and insight.

As to the process section, here’s a single page highlighting Tony’s finished pencils on page 7. You can see that I present full scans of his work. I then add a little commentary to point out changes and evolution of the pages as we go step by step.

Tony was a champ at sharing his work all along the way; I actually could have made progress sections on every single page of the book!

Now the important part: If you want a hard copy of this book, order it NOW via the Order tab at the top of the page. I printed 25 copies, and it looks like roughly 8 or 9 are left. I will not be reprinting this book (absent overwhelming demand) but instead will have PDF versions available at the Phoenix Productions Gumroad site.
